Yumi Okuaki solo exhibition The story of forests

【はじめに】
　大学を出て今年で12年目。一昨年あたりから自らの作品を見つめ直し、自分なりに試行錯誤を繰り返しています。とは言っても作品スタイルを大きく変えるのではなく、より充実した揺るぎない存在にしたいと思っているのです。それにはテーマ、材料、技法、そして思考する力、作品を生み出すために必要な事柄すべてに対し、誠実に向き合っていくしかないのでしょう。そして日々成長し続けることが必要なのでしょう。それはあたかも、複雑に枝を絡ませ鬱蒼と茂りわたる《森》のようなものなのかもしれません。

【森の物語について】
　私はもう何年も《時間》をテーマに作品を制作しています。そしてその発想の源が、町の中に点在する小さな森なのです。木々は天に向かい枝を伸ばし、何十年何百年もの年月をかけて成長し、周りの木々の枝と絡み合い、時には伐採されたり朽ち果てたりしながら木々は森を形成する。 大自然の広大な面積を持つ森と比べれば、町の森は森とは言えないかもしれません。しかし私にとっては大いなる時間を感じることができる神秘の森なのです。 今回の個展では時間を意味する《森》と、その中に生きる動物たちを描こうと思います。動物たちもその小さな体に時間を持ち合わせていて、森という時間の中に動物という違う時間が交差している。そして私もまた、私が刻んできた時間を持っているのです。それぞれの時間が重なったとき、森の神秘性を感じます。森が持つ神秘性がいくつもの物語を生み出すように、私が描き出す作品から多くの新しい物語が生まれることを望みながら制作しているのです。

Introduction
12 years have passed since I graduated from the University.
I have been rethinking about my works from the year before last, and repeating the creation by trial and error. I would not make a big change in my creative process, but I would like my works to be more substantial and unshakable presence.

A solution to complete this trial is to have a good relation with the themes, materials, techniques, the power for the consideration, and all the other necessary things for creation with sincerity. It may also need my daily growth. This process is like the “thick forest” which intricately interweaves the branches of trees.

About the theme
I have produced my art work by choosing the theme of “time” for many years. The source of my concept comes from the small forests existing in towns. Trees extend their branches to the sky, grow for tens of years, and hundreds of years, interweave to each other, and form the forest though sometimes being deforested and rotted away.

Comparing to a large forest in a great nature, a small forest in a town may not be called as a “forest”. However, it is a mysterious forest to me which I can feel the “time”.
　
In this exhibition, I would like to represent the forest which has the meaning of “time”, and animals living in those places. Animals also have “time” in their small body, and that intersect with the time of forests. Also I have my own “time” in myself. I feel a mystery of woods when “time” in animals, forests, and my body are crossing. I am working on my artworks with a hope that my works to produce new stories as if the mysterious forests produce many stories.
